The Worlds Best Downhill Skiing - Vail

Vail in Colorado has perhaps the biggest skiing area in North America and is a true contender for the title of the world's best downhill skiing destination. The resort consists of three main parts: The Front Side, Blue Sky Basin and The Back Bowls.

"Vail boasts three distinct areas of the mountain, each with their own features and fortes, including three terrain parks, seven bowls and 5,289 acres of freeride terrain. At seven miles wide, finding fresh tracks is as easy as finding elbow room. In fact, on an average day, there are only two skiers per acre, and on a busy day, only four!" (Vail.snow.com)

  1. Vail is certainly an outstanding ski resort and in combination with the stellar village at the base, Vail can certainly claim to be all things to all people. Unfortunately, the mountain does get more crowded than is expressed in this post. Having lived in Colorado, I often made the trek to Vail for some wonderful skiing. There are steeps, good snow, occasionally short lift lines and the village at the base is nice, save the fur shops and touristy bits. I wouldn't say that Vail can contend for the World's Greatest ski resort as it is missing a few things. The terrain could be a little more varied, the steeps a little scarier and the town a little less yuppie. But, overall this is a wonderful destination and well worth the trip. If you want this same sort of experience but pumped up a notch on the adventure side, check out Whistler. Awesome.
